Survey on “Hong Kong People Celebrating Family Day” Press Conference cum “Family Day 2017” Kick-off Ceremony

FAMILY Project launched “Family Day 2017”, inviting citizens to celebrate this festival together. This campaign aims at strengthening family cohesion and promoting FAMILY Health, Happiness and Harmony (3Hs).

To understand more about how Hong Kong people celebrate Mother’s Day and Family Day, the FAMILY Project announced the results of the territory-wide survey – “Hong Kong Family and Health Information Trends Survey” at the press conference today (25 April 2017). The survey interviewed over 2,000 Hong Kong people, and about 30 percent of the respondents reported that they would celebrate Family Day with their families. The most chosen family activities for celebrating Family Day was dining or eating with family, in which over 90 percent of the respondents indicated that they would dine or eat with their families, and over 80 percent of them chose outside rather than at home. Besides, the survey finds that having dinner with family could generate positive impacts on family communication time and quality, as well as FAMILY Health, Happiness and Harmony.

  • For those who would celebrate Family Day, most of them (95 percent) chose to dine or eat with their families to celebrate
  • For those who would dine or eat with their families to celebrate Family Day, most of them (over 80 percent) chose to dine or eat with their families outside rather than at home
  • Having dinner with family was positively associated with family communication time and quality, as well as FAMILY Health, Happiness and Harmony

Speakers at the press conference were Ms. Imelda CHAN, The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Head of Charities (Grant Making – Elderly, Rehabilitation, Medical, Environment and Family); and Professor LAM Tai Hing, Sir Robert Kotewall Professor in Public Health, Chair Professor of Community Medicine, School of Public Health, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU, and Principal Investigator of FAMILY Project. Mr. Anthony WONG Kin Wai, Business Director, The Hong Kong Council of Social Service; and Ms. Yan YUEN, representative of a participating merchant, were the guests at the sharing session.

FAMILY Project proposes to designate Family Day, a celebration day for the whole family, on the second Sunday after Mother’s Day every year, which is 28 May this year. Family Day 2017 is a series of territory-wide celebration events that involves collaboration with the commercial, academic, social service and health sectors. The speakers and guests also joined the kick-off ceremony for the Family Day 2017 at the press conference.

A series of large-scale celebration events will be held from April to June, and they are in three main themes, namely “Family Day – Shopping Fun”, “Family Day – Express Your Love to Family” and “Family Day – Fun Fair”.

“Family Day – Shopping Fun”

“Family Day – Shopping Fun” will be held from April to June. There will be three categories of offers, which are “Shopping”, “Dining” and “Entertainment”. The event is strongly supported by numerous brands, retail shops and restaurants. The public can enjoy special offers through 50,000 free copies of “Family Day 2017 Guidebook”, Family Day website and Family Day Facebook page. The free Guidebook will be distributed via magazine inserts and roadshows across Hong Kong. The objective of this event is to encourage families to shop or dine together, so as to increase quality time with family and to promote positive family communication.

“Family Day – Express Your Love to Family”

“Family Day – Express Your Love to Family” event will be held from 29 April to 21 May at 16 locations across Hong Kong. It encourages the public to express gratitude and love to their families. Participants can write and express their love to their families on free 3Hs postcards which will be provided and collected at the promotion vans. The collected 3Hs postcards will be used to break a Guinness World Record at the “Family Day – Fun Fair”. After the event, the postcards will be mailed to the participants’ families. During the said event, the public is also invited to enter the “Family Day – Express Your Love to Family” Photo Competition, which is to encourage families taking more family photos together. To join the competition, participants can take photos in the promotion vans and upload their photos together with their love messages to the Family Day Facebook page. The photos with the most “Like” will have the chance to win amazing prizes.

“Family Day – Fun Fair”

“Family Day – Fun Fair” will be held on the Family Day (28 May) at D·PARK, Tsuen Wan. It will be a large-scale celebration event with various family activities suitable for all ages. The highlight of the day will be the breaking of a Guinness World Record together with the people of Hong Kong, using the postcards filled with 3Hs messages. Other wonderful and exciting activities include onstage performances, Zero Time Exercises, game booths and more.
